Microsoft Windows Embedded OS – End Of Life Notice

Unitech PA692

Beginning in 2018 through 2020, Microsoft will phase out their support for various Windows Embedded Operating Systems. And since most rugged devices are currently running these systems today, it’s time to start planning the move to alternative Operating Systems and hardware.

Here are the scheduled dates announced by Microsoft for “End of Life”:

· April 10, 2018 – Windows Embedded CE 6.0 will be End of Life

· July 9, 2019 – Windows Embedded 8.1 Handheld will be End of Life

· January 14, 2020 – Windows Embedded Handheld 6.5 will be End of Life

If you are running Windows Embedded systems then it’s now time to start planning the move to other platforms as you begin to replace your older hardware. Depending on the number of handheld devices deployed in your organisation, you’ll want to get your upgrade strategy in place sooner rather than later to ensure there is a smooth and steady roll-out.  The final EOL deadline in 2020 isn’t that far away, and the closest is less than six months away so business’ will need to get their upgrade strategies in place fairly soon.

Which OS to Choose?

MS Windows will continue to offer it’s CE7 operating system providing a reasonably simple migration path for some however it is quite limited in its capability and your software development tools may need updating to work with it but just as importantly the number of Enterprise class handheld devices  currently available to choose from is rather limited also.

Should you make the switch to Android?

As you begin to plan your upgrade strategy, a leading Operating System to consider is Android which is now a commonly used on millions of smartphones, and therefore makes the user experience that much easier with users already familiar with how it works. And thanks to the major Auto ID hardware manufacturers, there is now a big push to put current versions of Android onto rugged type devices designed for outdoors and warehouses. Android is also easier to develop with, which makes it a very common platform for lots of mobile software applications.
