Label Printer – Heat Jackets

Protect your label printers this winter.

Thermal label printers that are deployed in cold storage areas or out in the warehouse near to external doors can easily fall foul of the elements as prolonged exposure to sub zero temperatures can make label printing a real problem. Printing delays can then have a serious impact on goods being ready to be shipped.

However there is now a way for you to ensure that label printer temperatures are maintained at a consistent ambient level within any cold environment by using a thermal heated printer cover that simply fits over the top and plugs directly into the mains power supply.

A wide range of sizes and grades are available so virtually all makes and models of label printers can be fitted and catered for. Please contact us for more details or for specific pricing of covers to suit your label printers.

2018 EU Falsified Medicines Directive

Is your business prepared for the 2018 EU Falsified Medicines Directive?

To combat the global threat of counterfeit medicines, authorities around the world are tightening up the supply chain with new regulations designed to try and stamp out these illicit goods. The solution involves using 2D barcode labels and intelligent software to keep track of all items moving through the pharmaceutical industry.

2DPharmaLabelScan.png

In simple terms it means that every pack of medicine or pharmaceutical product will require a unique identifier applied at the point of manufacture which can be tracked through the whole supply chain. The unique identifier will need to contain the product code, batch number and expiry date as well as its serial number to uniquely identify the pack. This data will also need to be contained in a 2D barcode which can be scanned and tracked throughout the supply chain.

So if you are a pharmaceutical manufacturer, distributor or pharmacy there will be a requirement to record, capture and share this information.

What are the implications for my business?

  • Label designs need to be updated to comply with the new regulations therefore any manufacturers of pharmaceutical will need to ensure that their labelling software is capable of printing 2D barcodes onto labels. We have several low cost design & print packages available on our Label Software pages.
  • The 2D codes can only be scanned by a 2D Imager scanner therefore distributors, resellers and vendors need to ensure their barcode scanning equipment is up to date. We have numerous compatible hand held mobile devices and plug in style barcode scanners available from our hardware pages.

If you need any help or advice on this matter then please feel free to contact our experienced sales team who will help choose the right upgrade solutions for you.

Deadline: July 2018

Regardless of experience level, end users can replace ribbons or labels and get back to work in seconds — with significantly fewer support calls to IT.

With prices starting from just £225.00 + VAT it’s just another compelling reason why the new ZD series should be your first & only option when buying your next compact label printer.

Groundbreaking ease of use

The ZD420 thermal printers are loaded with features for easy use. They are the only thermal printers to offer a ribbon cartridge for fool-proof and split-second installation. The ZD420 also lets you know when the ribbon needs replacing. And, five intuitive status icons make it easy for your workers to see, at a glance, what is needed to keep your printer up, running and available.

Add new options easily while on site

If you need new communication or media handling options in the future, no problem. Add serial or ethernet connectivity, plus a peeler or a cutter, right on site — without taking the ZD420 thermal printers out of service. The result? Maximum functionality, uptime, value and return on investment.

Virtually Every Modern Connectivity Option

Support for all of today’s modern connectivity options makes the ZD420 an easy fit into your technology environment now, and in the future. The ZD420 thermal printers come standard with USB, auto-sensing serial or 10/100 Ethernet. The very latest wireless connectivity is optional: Wi-Fi certified 802.11ac WLAN and Bluetooth 4.1. And you can support wired and wireless users simultaneously.

Production Monitoring & Tracking: The Rugged Facts

A worker has scanned steel roll production

Heavy industry has traditionally been an area where technology has been forced to constantly improve in order to meet the needs of a demanding work place as it requires every element operating within it to be robust. Data capture systems are no different and thankfully several mobile computer and barcode scanner manufacturers have taken on the challenge to now provide customers with a wide range of hardware that can operate in virtually all work places.

Whether you operate an automated production facility or simply cut and process raw materials, the need to monitor and track production levels is a vital part of maintaining an efficient production plant. Data can be captured at any stage of the production process and this can be done either automatically on a line, or manually for products or sites that cannot be automated.

Whilst data is of course captured automatically on a production line, the manual data capture process can also be a very fast and efficient process. Naturally it’s much more accurate than using a paper based system and there’s also a huge time saving element to consider as the recorded data is sent directly to the place it needs to be without the need for replicating the data entry process once again via a PC keyboard.

Hardware: Clients can now choose from a wide range of rugged tablets, mobile computers or fixed position terminals to capture production data all of which are built to withstand multiple drops to concrete and can be operated outdoors in wet, cold conditions or indoors within extremely warm or sub zero temperatures. More recently, the advancement of the ultra low cost Microsoft Raspberry Pi 3 computer and it’s ever extending range of compatible industrial cases has now also made this a viable option for shop floor data capture at a budget price. The RPi3 are sufficiently low cost that a standard terminal with an industrial steel case costs less than £50.00 + VAT with accessories available for just a few extra pounds.

 Industrial tablet device (TT8).
RPi3_Case

Software: Software applications need to be designed around the work processes being conducted on a day to day basis and these can either be supplied to order or can be created and deployed internally using a simple self build solution that works on either a Windows Mobile/Ce or Android operating system. The RPi device is a customisable solution but a modest, fully functioning data capture solution can be created for this device for just a few hundred pounds subject to an agreed specification.

Identification: Choose from a range of identification methods such as direct part marking (DPM) barcodes: robust labels or tags; re-usable steel labels on Containers or Totes; or disposable labels for extreme production processes. RFID technology can also be used if required using either NFC tags or UHF labels.

If you feel your organisation would benefit from the introduction of a simple production tracking system then, regardless of the type of work environment, please get in touch with us and let us meet the challenge to show you just how it easily it can be achieved.

Stock and inventory control systems can transform your business

If your business is growing then you almost certainly need a good system for tracking your stock and inventory rather than simply counting things by hand. Investing in a stock and inventory control management system could potentially transform your business. Here are a few reasons why.

Stock inventory Barcodes for Business

Simplicity

Having a stock and inventory control management system in place can keep you up to date on stock levels at all times. It’s particularly handy if you’re shifting a lot of units, when it is much harder to count everything by hand. Having something in place to do the counting for you, lets you keep track of what’s in stock and what needs to be re-ordered before you run out, without having to do a lengthy check.

Accuracy

Human error is to be expected when people are in charge of counting stock manually. However, such mistakes can potentially be very costly to business. This problem is made worse when a lot of products are being sold or delivered, making it very difficult for staff members to complete an accurate stock take.

You can eliminate this issue by having a designated system do stock takes for you, ensuring you have up to date inventory reports all the time.

Speed

Underlying the last two points is that a stock and inventory control management system can considerably speed up the process of counting your stock. There’s no need to go through all your products and count each one you have in. There’s no need to recount when you sell a number of items.

Your stock and inventory control management system keeps you up to date with how much of each item you have in stock, which will save you loads of man hours that would otherwise have been spent doing a stock-take.

Barcodes for Business offers a stock and inventory manager for Windows Mobile/CE devices to help you make your inventory management faster, more accurate and more efficient. It’s a fully portable system that you can use in or outdoors and is compatible with most Windows or Android devices. If you’re thinking of investing in a stock and inventory management system, please contact our team.

Efficiency with package tracking

Tracking deliveries can be a costly and time resource heavy task for any business. The simple process of tracking where a package is even on site can be a headache if you need to get it somewhere on time. Tracking software brings all kinds of benefits to a business, here are just a few that will help transform the way you work.

Real time information

Delivery tracking software generates real time information including GPS tracking so you can at a glance how far your item has gone on its journey. Delivery software can get proof of delivery with a signature so you know the package has successfully reached its recipient. It will create a system of accountability, where did the package go missing? If you have a network router with port forwarding enabled, you can also save this data via GPRS and analyse for productivity. You can then begin to look at strengthening the weak links of your business for future deliveries.

Create a more efficient service

If you are a retailer, delivery tracking makes complete sense but what if you are not? All industries can benefit from a tracking service from pharmaceuticals straight through to agricultural. Barcode verification of deliveries will ensure that data collected is accurate and greatly reduces human error. Our delivery tracking systems can be used on mobile devices on Windows or Android, on a PC using Access or Microsoft databases so it will be intuitive to your team.

delivery tracking, Barcodes for Buinsess

Lower overall cost

How much does it cost you to track a missing package? Once you consider man-hours, resources spent and insurance, you are probably spending more time locating lost items than you think. The initial cost of tracking software may seem scary, but the reality is that it doesn’t have to be expensive. Whatever the cost involved you can expect to make a huge overall saving by switching from a manual system. Evidence of accountability in your systems may also bring down your business insurance premium.

Barcodes for Business offers delivery tracking systems that can be made to measure and can in some cases work with your existing mobile hardware to help keep costs down. They can even work in conjunction with existing mobile sales software to help further improve your customer service. If you need some help or advice on your delivery software, please get in touch with our team.

Automated Label Printing Systems

Easily automate and control label printing from existing systems and commonly used PC applications

An Automation system is the simplest & fastest way to ensure accurate and consistent label printing without any expensive custom development required.

Simply connect label printers to your existing software applications or use hardware devices such as barcode scanners, motion sensors or weigh scales.

Send data through one of the many available connectivity methods to the Automation Software and it will extract relevant label data, merge with a pre-designed label template, and send print jobs to your selected hardware.

ZT230_BoxLabel_medium

Easily print bar code labels from your existing software applications

Business systems typically have little or no support for label printers. They require you to hard-code labels in a printer command language or use a font to represent a barcode. These approaches are complicated, limited in functionality and expensive to maintain, especially when printer models become obsolete. Automation software offers an easier way to:

  • Design label templates with a professional drag-and-drop graphical label designer.
  • Set up a simple configuration file within the Automation Builder software.
  • Use existing software applications, databases or spreadsheets to automatically trigger print commands either when a specific action is performed; an existing data table is edited; or when new records are added.
  • Run an Automated printing system requiring little or no maintenance that works with virtually any type of label printer.
electronic-weighing-scale-250x250

Print automatically from weight scales, PLCs and barcode scanners

Connect label printers to production hardware with NiceLabel Automation Software. Hardware devices can send data through RS232 or TCP/IP protocols, removing the need for manual data entry. Use a workflow event such as scanning a barcode or weighing a box to automatically initiate label printing.

Use Automation Software with:

  • Barcode scanners
  • RFID Readers
  • Weight scales
  • Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs)

Eliminate human error and increase customer satisfaction

When users enter incorrect data or select a wrong label template, your business is at risk of compliance fines, incorrect inventory data, wrongly shipped product and unhappy customers. Use Automation Software to print from existing applications and:

  • Remove the need for manual data-entry and standalone applications.
  • Use the data that already exists in your business applications without the need to export or merge files.
  • Eliminate any additional learning curves as users don’t interact with the printing software.

The benefits of event tracking software

Hosting a large-scale event can be tricky. You need to keep an eye on how many people come in and whether only those invited are in attendance, among other things.

Trying to do this manually is a tedious process; it’s easy to make mistakes and can delay the event if you’re keeping track of a lot of attendees. Using event tracking software ensures that these jobs are done efficiently and effectively.

Event tracking software comes in the form of mobile applications, which work by scanning attendees’ ID cards as they enter an event. It is quick and easy to customise according to your needs. The software automatically time and date stamps transactions; a useful tool if you are hosting a number of events close together. Once data is collected, it can be uploaded and sent via a LAN or WAN relatively quickly.

Event Tracking Barcodes for Business

Saves time

Obviously, using event tracking software is a serious time saver and an easy way to ensure all information regarding an event is accurate. With any good visitor registration and tracking system you should only need to touch a screen button or scan a barcode to record or access an attendee’s details on your database, eliminating any panic searching through spreadsheets or paper documents. Staff are able to spend less time on event tracking themselves allowing a more constructive use of their time elsewhere .

Scanning barcoding

Reduces risk

Event risk management is also an important consideration in using tracking software. Using the Check In/Check Out version means you can keep track of exactly who is at the event at any one time. Therefore, for example, if there is an emergency requiring an evacuation then you can perform either a detailed check or simple head count to ensure all delegates are out of the building. Investing in good tracking software could also bring down the overall cost of your insurance premiums too.

Future planning

After the event, the data you collect on attendees can be useful for planning future events. You can work out what type of person your event appeals to, which will help you decide on the kind of events to host in the future. From a marketing perspective, you can also use the software to gather contact details for attendees, with their permission, so that you can inform them about future events. With a 3G/4G connection you can save your attendee list across multiple mobile devices, ensuring your marketing team have a full up to date list at all times.

Thinking about the logistics of tracking attendees at your events? Our team has a wealth of knowledge and they would be happy to advise you. Get in touch now to speak with one of our experts.

How to choose the correct mobile computer for your healthcare business

Mobile computers are fantastic for speeding up processes in a healthcare business. However, with the range of options out there, you need to think carefully when selecting which devices to buy; so we have come up with some tips to help you.

Functionality

Firstly, consider what functions your mobile computer needs to have. That could be data collection, administering medicine, or specimen collection, for example. Some devices have wireless connectivity so that you can quickly access information stored elsewhere, such as patient records. This can considerably speed up care and duties.

The Motorola MC55A0-HC can use applications via its wireless function. It could allow healthcare specialists to quickly access patient records, administer the right dosage of medication, monitor their vital signs and view their test results. Devices like the Honeywell Dolphin 7800hc and the Dolphin 9700 Enterprise Digital Assistant have computing and data collection capabilities that are appropriate for point-of-care applications.

Aside from using them at the point-of-care, consider other useful functions that mobile computers could have. For example, those in charge of ordering supplies can also benefit from these devices; the Honeywell Dolphin 9700 Enterprise Digital Assistant can support applications such as parcel delivery and the MC554A0-HC can also be used to place orders at labs and pharmacies.

dolphin9700hc 01, Barcodes for Business

Practicality

Think about how practical the device is in the workplace; if it comes into contact with a patient with a contagious condition, how easy is it to disinfect the device? Or how resilient is it to bumps and being dropped on the floor? This can easily happen in a busy practise. Devices such as the Motorola MC55A0-HC and the Honeywell Dolphin 7800hc are designed to handle such impacts and to be disinfected with harsh chemicals if required.

Compatibility

Before making any final purchase, find out if the hardware is compatible with the software your healthcare business uses. Otherwise you’ll either have to buy new software or return the devices.

If you want to find out more about mobile computer hardware available for healthcare, contact our team for an expert opinion on the devices that could benefit your business.

Printing Labels – The Hidden Costs

Many small and medium sized (& some large) companies maintain their business’s using Microsoft Excel to manage a lot of their financial and product information.

In terms of product information it is common for a business to use Excel as a form of product database.  However printing on-demand barcode labels for product identification, warehouse or shipping labels from within Excel is not possible without a label design and print software solution with a database link to the Excel file.

It is strange that so many businesses have chosen to use free of charge sample label design programs, or low cost programs without any support for printing from Excel.  This means that these businesses have had to create an individual label for each product, and open and print the label for each product when required.

The problem for Existing Products/Customers

Although the information already exists in the spreadsheets, the result is that when the label design needs to be changed or updated, EVERY label needs to be opened and amended.

NiceLabel Allergen Label

The problem for New Products/Customers

Although the information will be entered on the Excel worksheet, the result is that someone will need to find the time to create a new label for EVERY new product.

How many labels do you have and how much would it cost you to amend them?

It is not uncommon for a company to have hundreds, sometimes thousands of products and therefore labels that need to be amended from time to time (compliance changes, customer change requests etc), resulting in significant labour costs to amend the many individual product label files.

Example: If you had 200 products (i.e 200 labels) and it took around 10 mins to amend, test & save each label, it would take over 32 hours. Even at an average cost of £12.50 per hour, the total cost to you would be £400.00, and that’s EVERY time you need to make a design change.

Yet the answer is very simple and very cost effective.

From just £195.00 you can use a label design program that offers a very easy to use label design solution that supports printing labels from Excel.  Instead of creating hundreds of product label files, you simply create 1 label template that uses variable data from the Excel file.

This means you only have 1 or 2, or at worst a few label templates to manage for all your products and all of your customers.

Ask yourself, can you really manage and amend hundreds of product labels for less than £195, or should you be using a simple solution that takes minutes to amend and can literally saves you £000’s?

Four innovative uses for Barcodes

Barcodes have been in commercial use for over 30 years and during that time, people have always been attempting to find new and ingenious ways of putting them to good use. We have looked at some of the most innovative ways businesses have used barcodes to either reach more customers or to just entertain them.

Shopping

QR codes have somewhat struggled to be adopted by retailers across Europe and in the US, but across Asia they are very popular and can be found everywhere. Tescos decided to encourage time-strapped Korean to shop with them through their virtual shop found in subways and metro stations. The Tesco shops were nothing more than grocery images with QR codes attached those customers could scan and have delivered to their home while on the commute. We are not sure if this business model could work anywhere else in the world but it a clever way to engage with shoppers using 2D barcodes.

Tesco Virtual Store

Consumer Apps

Barcode scanning apps are nothing new but how consumers are using them is something  entirely new . The money conscious shopper can scan a barcode to find the best online price for a product but now apps have been created for consumers to track their food intake, monthly budgets and even catalogue their CD collections. Barcodes use to be purely for business use, now consumers can use them to completely organise their lives.

Games

Even games are making use of the common, unassuming barcode! Games such as Codemon get players to scan barcodes of house hold items to find creatures or spells they can battle with friends. In app purchases allow the player to upgrade their creatures and buy weapons for battle. Having tested out a few of these games, they are rather addictive and get you emptying your kitchen shelves in a bid to find more creatures to add to your collection.

Events

Registration at large scale events can be a nightmare involving thousands of people, especially if you are depending on a traditional paper based system. Cross-referencing names with contact details and then finding the right name tag or information pack just adds to the stress of it all for events teams. This is why barcoded badges or wristbands are a fantastic innovation. A quick scan of a barcode allows for instant entry and exit of events while also keeping attendees contacts information on a digital record, for follow up contact.

If you have an innovative ideas to boost your business, contact our team to find out how barcoding and scanning technology could help you.

Labels & Ink Ribbons: A helpful Guide

With so many different label printers and print media products available on the market it can be something of a minefield buying the correct compatible products. Here’s our concise guide to buying the right type of consumables for your direct thermal or thermal transfer label printer.

Label Roll Size

Most label rolls are supplied on either a 4″ (100 mm), 5″ (125 mm) or 8″ (200 mm) outside diameter roll.

labels_ribbons_zebra

Modern desktop label printers such as the Zebra GC, GK & GX series, Honeywell PC42 & PC43 range and Tec B-EV4, to name but a few, all have the capacity to take upto 5″ outside diameter label rolls.  The less common 4″ diameter rolls (originally designed for older smaller printers) are also compatible with these models.

Industrial label printers such as the Zebra ZT200 & ZT400 range, Intermec PM4 series and Tec B series all have the capacity to take upto 8″ rolls but please note that you shouldn’t assume smaller rolls will fit into larger printers as invariably the smaller label rolls designed for desktop devices will have a smaller diameter core size that won’t fit these printers making them unusable.

Ink Ribbons For Label Printers

Ink ribbons come in two general core sizes (0.5″ for desktop printers and 1″ for larger industrial printers) and they have the ink coated on either the inside or outside of the roll to suit each type of manufacturer. The likes of Datamax require ink on the inside of the roll whereas Zebra, Sato & Honeywell all require outside ink rolls.

Ribbon lengths are relative to the physical size of the printer with the smaller desktop varietes taking a ribbon length of up to a maximum of 74 metres in the case of all modern Zebra printers and 91 metres for several other manufacturers units. Larger industrial printers can accommodate the 300, 360, 450 and in some cases 600 metre length ribbons which are designed to save time by virtue of the fact they don’t require changing quite as often.

Ribbon Grades

Getting the right label material and ink ribbon combination can be a work of art however there are some general guidelines you can follow to ensure you get an acceptable print quality from your label printer.

Wax ink ribbons generally work only on paper based label materials. The higher the gloss finish of the paper the more unlikely a wax ribbon will work and you should consider a higher grade ink for anything other than matt paper.

A Wax Resin ribbon is a higher grade ink which will give a more permanent print onto paper particularly higher grade or coated types and it will also work quite effectively on some types of synthetic materials too.

Resin ink ribbons are designed to work on synthetic materials such as Polyethylene, Polypropylene, Vinyl etc and these can also come in several grades to work on a variety of different materials such as fabric etc.

But please remember there’s one simple rule to getting it all right: If in doubt – always test the materials on your printer first. Barcodes For Business Ltd can help with this and we offer a range of free label & ribbon samples for you to trial. Please contact us for details.

Choosing the correct label printing software.

BarTender_logo

Whether you spell it barcode, bar code, or bar-code, the right software for you likely depends as much on how you want to print your barcodes as it does on the type of barcodes that you need to print. If you are looking to place a pre-printed UPC or EAN-13 barcode on a retail point of sale product (for example, as you might see on a box of cereal), then all you need is software that can generate barcodes for export into your software.

In contrast, “on demand” applications tend to use barcodes other than UPC and EAN-13, including many of those listed below. And, rather than being imported into pre-press artwork, these barcodes are usually printed as needed on labels. What’s more, these labels often contain much more than just the barcode. In addition to the “human readable” version of the barcode data (often, but not always, appearing underneath the barcode), there can be a substantial quantity of text-based information. There may even be a picture of a part, or other graphics. (That’s why some industrial labels are so large.)

Just because software can print labels doesn’t mean that it can print labels with barcodes. For example, the simple label software you might buy to print addresses to mail your household bills or ship your company newsletter just isn’t going to support the variety of advanced barcodes and data integration required by industrial labeling applications.

Fortunately, BarTender label software can do it all. It comes with out-of-the-box support for more than 100 barcode standards, just about any size text and text style, as large or small a label as your printer can handle, and it can even encode RFID tags. And, if all you need is to export a barcode into your pre-press artwork, BarTender can do that too!

Please click here for more information about BarTender.

Overview of Barcode Standards:
